Lyric Opera is presenting a free concert. Pack your picnic basket and bring your friends to enjoy acclaimed Lyric star voices as we celebrate a new season. I’m not sure what the average age of a Lyric Opera subscriber is these days but I’m sure these free concerts are an attempt to attract a new and younger audience.
Sir Andrew Davis, Lyric’s music director, will lead the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus, members of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, and an array of outstanding soloists including Ana María Martínez and Eric Owens in an unforgettable program featuring excerpts from Carmen (French), The Magic Flute (German), Eugene Onegin (Russian), and Lucia di Lammermoor (Italian). They will perform selections from other operas by Gounod, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, and Wagner.
Come early to claim your free gift. Starting one hour before the show, we’ll be handing out Lyric shopping totes to the first 4,000 people who arrive for the concert! (Limit of one per person.)
All of these operas pieces will be performed in a foreign language. I’ve indicated the language above. Lyric will be projecting an English translation above the stage known as supertitles for those of us not fluent in Italian, etc. They also provide live translations via mobile devices at lyricoperalive.org. The concert will also be aired live on 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com.
There will also be a sing-along portion to the concert, of Verdi’s famous “Va, pensiero” from the opera Nabucco with lyrics provided to the audience in advance.
