One Seed Chicago

The envelope, please. And this year’s winner of One Seed Chicago is – drum roll — basil. Like a good Chicagoan I voted in the Spring election. Unlike many elections where I wished I could cast my ballot for NONE OF THE ABOVE, I had a difficult time deciding which of the three excellent candidates to vote for. In the end, I chose basil. Now I have nothing against the other two candidates: cilantro and chamomile, but you can’t make a Caprese salad or pesto without the leaves of a basil plant. And really, with former winners like last year’s Swiss Chard and Sunflower in 2008, the bar was set high.

In exchange for my vote – well, you don’t expect to vote in Chicago and not get something do you? I received an envelope containing FREE basil seeds, instructions for growing basil plants and harvesting the seeds to use next year.  Well, actually everyone who voted received the envelope.

One Seed Chicago is an annual project of NeighborSpace. Onward to 2013!

When I was a kid, museums located on Chicago Park District land, that’s most of Chicago’s busiest museums, were required to offer free admission one day each week. That changed. Now these museums are required to offer 52 free days per year – either one day per week or bunched together however they see fit. This explains why finding free days is confusing.

Here are Free Days at Chicago Museums from Monday, May 7 through Sunday, May 13, 2012.

Art Institute of Chicago, Wednesday, May 9. FREE general admission for Illinois residents only.

Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier Thursday, May 10, 2012 from 5-8 pm. Free general admission for all visitors.

Museum of Contemporary Art Tuesday, May 8, 2012. FREE general admission for Illinois residents only.

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum Thursday, May 10, 2012. FREE general admission for Illinois residents only.

Glessner House Museum Wednesday, May 9, 2012. FREE guided tours are limited to 12 guests, first-come, first-served.

Charnley-Persky House Wednesday, May 9,  2012. FREE guided tours are offered every Wednesday at 12 Noon.  Tours are limited to 15 guests, first-come, first-served.

And always free to the public: National Museum of Mexican Art, The Smart Museum of Art, Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, The Museum of Contemporary Photography and The DePaul Art Museum.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to have “the talk” with your child – the talk about money. It doesn’t grow on trees you know, I’m  not made of money, etc. Maybe the kids will listen to experts from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago who are sponsoring   “Money Smart Kids Read”, an hour-long event that includes a fun story about financial literacy and freebies for kids to take home. It’s all part of Money Smart Week 2012.  Saturday, April 21 from 10:00 – 11:00 am at the American Intercontinental University, 130 S. Franklin, Chicago. RSVP required: kcollier@aiuniv.edu or (312) 419-1624

Hospitals and doctors make me nervous. I like relaxed clinics inside Walgreen’s and Target where I can pick up a tube of mascara or bottle of shampoo instead of working myself into a frenzy in a cold room. I can’t promise you a shopping experience, but I can guarantee a worry-free atmosphere at the Family Health Fair at The James Hart Junior School  (Go Panthers!)

Representatives from the Ingalls Health System will offer free blood tests, free osteoporosis, arthritis and back pain screenings, free allergy tests, free vision exams, free hearing tests and more at the 29th Annual FREE Family Health Fair.  Think of all the money you’ll save thanks to The Homewood Rotary Club and the Ingalls Health System who generously co-sponsor this annual free event.

Sunday, April 1, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. The James Hart Junior High School, H-F Sports Complex, 183rd and Aberdeen, Homewood, IL. Call 1-800-221-2199 for more information.
