What is the CHIditarod?

The Chicago Urban Shopping Cart Race, known as the CHIditarod, is an annual race through the Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village Chicago neighborhoods. The date of the event coincides with the kickoff of the Alaskan Iditarod ® (whom CHIditarod is not affiliated with in any way).

Instead of sleds, CHIditarod is run with shopping carts. Instead of dogs, they use teams of five humans: four pullers and one musher, all in costumes they have designed for themselves and their cart. Each team is required to start with their cart full of food for donation. It’s a food drive, a race for charity, a beauty pageant, a bar crawl, spontaneous street theater, and not for the faint of heart.

2019 Checkpoints

We announce the checkpoints early so your friends can gather at their favorite checkpoint to cheer you on. Teams will not know which bars they are going to or their route order till the morning of the race. Teams go to 5 bars and the finish line. Don’t forget to ask them to bring food for the food drive

  • Phyllis’ Musical Inn (1800 W. Division)
  • Roots Pizza (1924 W. Chicago)
  • Mahoney’s Pub (551 N. Ogden)
  • Five Star Bar (1424 W. Chicago)
  • Output Bar (1758 W. Grand)

A printable route map for the 2019 race will be made available for download RIGHT HERE very soon.

Remember that the CHIditarod is a massive Food Drive

Please support the cause by bringing food to the checkpoints (*Phyllis’s is the only checkpoint with a food collection bin) and for giving to racers at the starting line/finish line. Referencing GCFD’s most needed items, the following are strongly preferred and provide greater nutritional value to the hungry:

Peanut Butter, Canned Beans, Canned Chili, Canned Soup, Canned Stew, Canned Fruit, Canned Vegetables, Canned Fish
