Chinese New Year Dance
Argyle Street Lunar New Year Parade
When: Saturday, February 1, 2020 Parade steps-off at 1pm
Where: Uptown, 1121 W. Argyle St. (5000 N) Route: Argyle St. from Broadway to Sheridan Rd. to Ainslie
The annual Argyle Lunar New Year Parade is decades-old local tradition. Come for music, colorful lion dances, and more. Come along with a processional of local groups and floats starting at the Argyle EL stop (red line).
Celebrate New Year with Chinese Fine Arts Society
When: Saturday, February 1, 2020 2:00-3:30PM
Where: Apple Store, 401 North Michigan Avenue
Celebrate Chinese New Year with music, dance, and kung fu with the Chinese Fine Arts Society. Tuvergan Band will play traditional Chinese music while Hao Dance performs, followed by kung fu from Guili Wang. You’ll record the performances on iPhone and experiment with slow motion and time-lapse to make a video to share. For sessions with amplified sound, hearing loop technology is available on request.
When: Sunday, February 2, 2020, . The parade will step off at 1:00 p.m.
Where: 24th Street and Wentworth Avenue. The procession will head north up Wentworth to Cermak Road, and feature marching bands, colorful floats, traditional lion dances and a special appearance by Ronald McDonald.
Free Chinese New Year event Art Institute of Chicago
This years event is being held in Griffin Court and not the Ryan Learning Center (which is undergoing remodeling) so this event is only Free with museum admission, no registration required.
When: Saturday, February 8, 2020, Drop in 1:00–5:00. Procession at 5:00pm to Maggie Daley Park. Art making and a lantern procession to Maggie Daley Park for more events. More info here. Celebrate the Year of the Pig featuring art making. Over a thousand people attended this event last year.
Free Lion Dance Lantern Parade to Maggie Daley Park
When: Saturday, February 8, 2020 5:00PM-7:30PM
Where: Millennium Park Bridge to Maggie Daley Park
At 5:00pm head across the street from the Modern Wing on Monroe in Millennium Park for a special lantern procession and continue the celebration at Maggie Daley Park. Anyone can join the procession to Maggie Daley Park. Related to event above
Cultural Appreciation: Cantonese Opera 文化欣赏: 粤曲演唱
Enjoy traditional Cantonese opera performed by Zhaoqiu Chinese American ART Center at Chinatown. Cantonese opera has been a popular form of drama and musical theater in China, and has been reformed and continues to be performed today. The acting and singing techniques, as well as makeup conventions, owe much to southern China tradition.

Chinese New Year Kickoff Celebration

Where: Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph, Preston Bradley Hall
Celebrate the start of Chinese New Year with a free, multi-arts lunch hour performance featuring the Chicago Chinese Cultural Center lion dancers, martial arts, an award winning solo dance by Hao Dance’s Angela Wan, music by Chicago’s own Tuvergen Band performing on a trio of Mongolian and Chinese instruments and the Silk Road Ensemble pipa master Yang Wei. This event will also feature special guest artists direct from China — the Zhejiang Shaoju Opera Theater.
