Discount theater tickets from TodayTix. TodayTix is another discount theater ticket app that we can put in our arsenal to save money on theater tickets.
TodayTix (TT) started in New York and expanded to Chicago in 2015. I’ve recently tested it and it worked out great.
What is TodayTix (TT)
TT, like Goldstar and Hottix, sells unsold ticket inventory. Initially they only offered day-of show Rush Tickets but have since expanded to selling tickets up to thirty days in advance. When I tested it the vast majority of tickets available were same-day and same-week. There was limited availability beyond that. TT charges a $10 fee per ticket.
They claim to use “insider knowledge” to get the best prices available on last-minute tickets where you can save fifty percent or more. Like all discount ticket services the percentage discount indicated is fairly accurate. Basically how it works is their employees stand in line at the box office and buy tickets – so you don’t have to.
I only use the app where you can filter down your options and the really brilliant thing about it is it took me about a minute to buy tickets including logging in. You can also purchase via the website.
Use my promo code HKUUQ and you’ll get $10 off your first order (I get a $10 credit once you’ve attended the show. Thank you). Ugh this ended abruptly on 4/5/18.
Sixty percent of tickets are discounted
Only about sixty percent of TT’s tickets are sold at a discount. It’s always advisable to determine what the regular tickets prices are for an event, including fees, so you’ll know if you’re actually getting a deal. You should also check box office prices, where there are no fees, so you know how much you’re saving.
Mobile lotteries
Most days they offer an app-only lottery for $30 tickets to one show. The show on offer when I did my investigation was Shakespeare in Love at the Shakespeare Theater. Regular ticket prices were $78-$88 so this was a good deal.
Free First Previews
From time-to-time they also offer a mobile lottery to win two free tickets to a performance. TT offers mobile lottery tickets for every First Preview show at the Victory Garden Theater. When I tested the app and signed up for a lottery I actually won tickets!
35 or under discount
At the time of this post they were offering the age 35 or under crowd a deal where you get $20 tickets to a show at the Goodman Theater and a free voucher for half off drinks at the theater. Nice!
My experiences
I used Todaytix to buy tickets to Escape to Margaritaville. On the day I purchased the theater was having a one day sale but I was too lazy to walk/bus over to the box office. TT prices were the same as the Box Office but their fee is only $10 v. $20 for Ticketmaster. So essentially I paid $10 for someone to stand in line for me.
I also used TT to buy tickets to Beautiful. TT prices were cheaper than Goldstar which is usually never the case so I went with TT.
When you buy tickets they send you reminders for your upcoming show and an email telling you where to meet their ticket agent outside the theater. You don’t have to stand in the Will Call line. Their agent delivers the tickets 30 minutes before the show. My agent, for both shows, was right on time.
You don’t find out where your seats are until they hand you the tickets. I bought “Side Rear Orchestra” but my tickets were in the third row center orchestra! So I paid $61 plus $10 fee for a $125 seat. Cha-ching! YMMV. On my second outing I bought “Side orchestra” and that’s what I got. I am very pleased with the whole operation. I would highly recommend adding it to your search for discount theater tickets.
