The influential Chicago performance and exhibition center, Hothouse, celebrates 35 years with a day-long, free jazz festival and spoken word performance on Saturday, July 23, 2022.
Since 1987, Hothouse has presented acclaimed international artists including Afro-Peruvian singer Suzana Baca, musician and jazz poet Gill Scot Heron and legendary Cuban band Los Van Van. For the center’s 35th anniversary, three noted jazz ensembles will perform–Burnt Sugar Arkestra, The Fred Jackson Quintet and Trio W.A.Z. , with renowned poet Tara Betts as emcee.
Poets and spoken word artists Marvin Tate and Keith Kelley will perform literary tributes to Greg Tate, music critic, writer, musician and founding member of the Burnt Sugar Arkestra. Group art-making activities will also be featured at the family-friendly event which runs from 3-7 pm in the “art yard” of Bronzeville’s Chicago Youth Center at 3953 S. Michigan Ave.
The festival is free but registration is encouraged.
