How to save money at Walgreens. Walgreens is super convenient but no one wants to pay full price for that convenience. If you employ a few methods you may be able to save money on many of the items that you purchase there.
Join the Balance Rewards program
As soon as you join add the everyday points perk to your account and you will get 10 points per $1 on almost everything.
There are also Balance Rewards weekly offers where if you purchase a featured item(s) and use your Balance Rewards card you are rewarded with anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 points an item or purchase. You can check the Weekly Ad in-store or online for qualifying items. You don’t have to carry the card just enter the phone number registered to your account. As always you have to know your prices to be sure that the item is really cheaper after the Balance Rewards.
Balance Rewards program
The next time you’re in the store or shopping online you can redeem your newly earned Redemption Dollars against any purchase except: dairy; alcohol; tobacco; stamps; phone/prepaid/gift cards; money order/transfers; transportation passes; and other items. You can find all the rules here.
Here I applied my Balance Rewards to a 50 ounce container of Tide that was on sale with tax for $5.10. Net cost a dime!
You can cash in points as you go or save up for a future discount. Be careful sometimes they will deduct the Balance Rewards points at the register without asking you.
Items ordered online and delivered to your home will earn points the same as if purchased in-store. Shipping is free for orders over $35. Items ordered online using the “store pickup” feature will only earn points after the items have been picked up from the store.
You can earn Balance Rewards even if items are on sale and if you are using other discounts as in this online order. The original order was $55.78 which included one item that was $5 off. Then I applied $15 worth of coupons, including $10 from Visa Checkout, or a total discount of 33% plus I earned 2000 bonus points or $2 extra. Cha-ching!
Beware – points expire
Points expire one year after they are earned or if an account has been inactive for 6 months. Sadly the Walgreens website only allows you to view points earned in the last 180 days. If you’re stockpiling you’ll have to contact them to get the date of the oldest points in your account. They have Live Chat on the website that works.
You may also apply your Balance Rewards points to online orders. The same restrictions for in-store redemption apply.
On this online order I applied a 20% off coupon and then $5 of Balance Rewards for a total savings of 30%.
You can sign up for Balance Rewards online or in-store. You don’t have to card carry the card. You can just type in your telephone number at the register every time you make a purchase that is eligible for Balance Rewards.
You’ll earn 5,000 Balance Reward points (value $5) for every $50 spent on most beauty purchases. In order to reach the $50 purchase requirement, the qualifying spend total is calculated before taxes and shipping, and after discounts, redemption dollars and store credit have been applied. You don’t have to spend $50 is one purchase. It’s cumulative. Eligible items include: Cosmetics, nails, skin care, hair care, fragrances, beauty accessories and bath products. Excludes prescriptions, baby hair care, baby skin care and men’s grooming products.
Clip coupons from the Weekly Ad (no paper involved)
This is the number one way I save money at Walgreens. Every week they have “loss leader” staple items that I pick up such as sugar, vegetable oil, honey, paper plates, plastic wrap, eggs etc. all at rock bottom prices. I review the Weekly Ad online and then “clip” the coupons directly onto my card so you don’t need to print anything or tear out coupons in-store. Then the next time I walk by I run in and pick up the sale items.
There’s a limit of one coupon printed per offer. So even if you purchase the same item twice you will only receive one coupon. Check your coupons for exclusions, limitations and expiration date.
Check your Balance Rewards account regularly via the app or online and clip special offers and “perks” to your card
While writing this post I looked in my account and found a “perk” Bonus Offer August 29 – September 6 Get 7,000 points when you spend $20. There are no details so I will assume that it has to be in one purchase.
Use Register Rewards
When you shop with your Balance Rewards card sometimes coupons will print out with your receipt. These are Register Rewards. They are coupons that print when you make a qualifying purchase of an eligible item(s). They can be used like cash on your next purchase. You can check the weekly ad online or in-store to find out which products are eligible for register rewards that week. As always you have to know your prices to be sure that the item is really cheaper after the Register Rewards. Register Rewards are only available in store.
Sign up for their Newsletter
The email newsletter offers discounts not available online or in stores. I’ve received offers for 20%, 25% and 30% off my whole order. I keep a list of things I will need soon and use these coupons to pick them up at a discount.
Shop Walgreen’s store brands
Like grocery store brand products many Walgreen’s brand products have the exact same ingredients as the name brand versions but cost much less. Many Walgreen’s brand and Nice brand products are also the weekly loss leaders as mentioned above.
Pick up the Monthly Coupon Book or review online
These are usually located in the front of the store by the weekly flyers. You can go through it once a month to see if there are any good deals. Review online. If this link stops working Google “Walgreens monthly savings book”.
Link your AARP membership to your Balance Rewards Card
