View 120 detailed portraits of indigenous people during the mid-19th century in an exhibit of rarely seen images, “Indigenous Portraits Unbound” at the Newberry Library through March 30, 2023.
Examine photos from one of the most expensive and influential books in the United States before the Civil War: History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Published between 1837 and 1844, which was a time of great upheaval and dispossession for this country’s indigenous people, the book reflects the pride and humanity that they still maintained.
“Indigenous Portraits Unbound” is on display at Hanson Gallery on Tuesday-Thursday 10 am- 7pm and Friday and Saturday, 10 am- 5 pm.
