Chicago boasts two airports but while O’Hare supplies international flights and extensive amenity options, the much smaller Midway Airport sometimes feels like the place to quickly catch a flight and nothing else.
If you’re stuck at Midway with hours until your flight, here are some activities that you can do to help you spend your time.
Exhale in the Yoga Room
Say namaste and enter into the tranquility of the free Yoga Room, located in Concourse C, next to the Mothers Room. Don’t worry about bringing a mat, there are exercise mats (free wipes are available) to lay on the bamboo wood floor as well as a space to store your outerwear and luggage.
Glass windows stream natural light and plants help the space feel soothing. Kick off your shoes and unwind until your flight time. The Yoga Room is open from 6 AM-10 PM.
Discover History at the Battle of Midway Exhibit
Stroll over to Concourse A to learn about Midway Airport’s name and Chicago’s pivotal connection to U.S. Naval History. A multi-media display as well as the Doulgas SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber suspended from the ceiling explains the WWII battle.
The fight happened on June 4-7, 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor and Chicago’s role in training pilots for the Battle of Midway is worth learning about. The area is also quiet, with tables and chairs for unwinding.
Take an Airport Art Tour
The beauty of Chicago is on full display with art pieces exhibited on Concourse A, near gates 4A and 4 B. Checkout murals, paintings and photos highlighting landmarks like Garfield Conservatory, Chicago River kayaking and Navy Pier at night.
Eat Like a Chicagoan
Although it’s not the same as experiencing the original restaurants, you can get a taste of classic Chicago eats at Midway Airport. Sink your teeth into Chicago deep-dish pizza at Southside staples, Home Run Inn and Connie’s Pizza.
For old-school Chicago dishes, check out RJ Grunts, Harry Caray’s Shortstop or Billy Goat Tavern. If you’re craving newer flavors, head to Arami for sushi or Hubbard Inn for sophisticated small plates.
Pick up some famous Chicago snacks at Garrett’s Popcorn and Nuts on Clark.
Relax at the Active or Retired Military Oasis
The newly renovated USO Center offers a cozy spot for the military and their families to decompress. Located after security in Concourse C, the lounge provides food, drinks, two computers, a printer and free WIFI.
A library of books and magazines and a collection of movies and board games two big-screen TVs and an Xbox gaming system make sure that guests are entertained during their stay.
