The delicate blooms of cherry blossoms trees are a beloved marker of the spring season but you don’t have to travel to Japan to enjoy them. Chicago’s cherry blossom season typically runs from late April to early May in Jackson Park.
Head to Hyde Park and the Garden of the Phoenix Japanese Garden in Jackson Park to view the fragrant pink and white flowers. About 190 cherry blossom trees frame the park area just south of the Museum of Science & Industry.
The trees require a certain amount of cold and warm temperatures to fully bloom and last a brief period from six to 14 days. The Japanese word for cherry blossom viewing is Hanami and the season is celebrated with viewing parties and cultural events.
Chicago’s own Hanami Festival is set for May 5, 2024, in Jackson Park. The Japanese Culture Center hosts the free celebration of classical Japanese dance, Taiko drums and origami workshops among the cherry blossom trees.
The Hanami Festival runs from 10- 2 pm but visitors can explore the park’s beautiful pavilions, paths, fountains and ponds while checking the progress of the blossoms starting in mid-April. Follow Chicago Parks and #ChiCherryblossoms on Instagram for bloom progress.
