Every year I write a post Where to get the lowest price on Thanksgiving turkey nationwide for our mothership website Livingonthecheap.com. I’m about to start on the 2016 update.
So when I got an email from Whole Foods advertising a sale on Nature’s Rancher Whole Frozen turkeys for $1.19 per pound it caught my eye. Last year they were $2.49 per pound. Whole Foods says the regular price is $1.99 per pound.
In 2015 turkey supplies were very low which lead to wholesale turkey prices being at an all-time high. Still, grocers didn’t pass that increase on to consumers and were selling turkeys as a loss-leader item in the hopes that once you’re in the store you’d make other purchases.
So if $2.49 per pound was a loss leader last year then $1.19 is probably a really good price. Nature’s Rancher are sold exclusively at Whole Foods and contain no antibiotics, no added hormones and no animal by-products.
Most cheaper turkeys aren’t of the same quality except for Trader Joe’s fresh turkeys which were $1.99-$2.49 per pound last year. Bell and Evans is also excellent and was $3.98 per pound in 2015.
If you have the freezer space get a great deal on turkey now for Thanksgiving and check something off your shopping list. The sale lasts through 11/15/16 or while supplies last.
