Visit the new Chicago Architecture Center
The Chicago Architecture Foundation, now renamed the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC), has moved to a new location.
Where: Chicago Architecture Center, 111 E. Wacker Drive (@ Michigan), 312-922-3432 for general info
312-922-TOUR to book a tour.
The good news and the bad news
The good news is that it’s spectacular. The bad news is that admission is now $12 when it used to be free. They’ve also raised the prices on their tours. That said there is so much more to see compared to the old location. They’ve had a new model of the city built and it has 4,000 buildings (v. 1,800 previously). There’s much more educational material but it’s concise and not boring.
Not just for architecture geeks
I personally could have looked at the city model for hours. I won’t say much so you can enjoy it yourself but there’s a lot of interesting and educational exhibits. When you enter go to the back first and watch the movie. Take time and walk through the perimeter. Aslo all the models in plexiglass on the second floor are on loan so they will leave eventually.
The best deal – take a walking, bus, bike or train tour
Admission is Adults: $12, Student (with ID): $8, Children under 5: Free. The best deal is to take a walking, bus, bike or train tour because the ticket price includes admission to the Chicago Architecture Center within 7 days of your tour.
Take a River Cruise
If you take a CAC river cruise you can visit the Chicago Architecture Center for $5. This includes if you purchase 50% off Chicago Architecture River Cruise tickets. Just bring your river cruise ticket to the CAC box office.
Expanded kids programs
They will be offering expanded kids programming sometime in November or December some of which will be included in the price of admission. I’ll post that when I get the info.
The Gift Shop
The gift shop is much larger than the old one and it has some great items but it is insanely expensive $35 t-shirts etc.
